Pinnacle’s Reed Owsley Retires, Mackinson Named Successor →

Carolina Tractor and Pinnacle Cranes announced that Reed Owsley, vice president and general manager of Pinnacle Cranes, will be retiring from the company, effective December 31, 2010. Jim Mackinson has been named as Owsley’s successor and will join the company in early July. Owsley has been a key member of the Carolina Tractor executive management team since joining the company in December 2001, when Carolina Tractor acquired the distribution rights for Link-Belt Cranes in the Carolinas.  Click for more...

At the risk of many puns being made on its name, Louisiana’s Geaux Wider project is Louisiana Department of Transportation & Development’s ambitious multi-year project to decrease travel time between Interstates 10 and 12 in East Baton Rouge and Livingston Parishes. Cable Stay Bridge Marks New Era in Minneapolis →

Hoover Dam Bypass Project Approaches End →

A 1,060-ft. (323 m) concrete arch curves 900 ft. (274.3 m) above the Colorado River, part of a 1,900-ft. (579 m) long bridge with its abutments set into the cliffs of the Black Canyon, approximately 1,500 ft. (457.2 m) downstream of the Hoover Dam. Starting in November, traffic traveling U.S. 93 will use this monumental new bridge to cross the Colorado River between Nevada and Arizona. The current route across the top of the Hoover Dam cannot safely accommodate the 14,000 vehicles and trucks that use it each day; issues include sharp turns, narrow roadways, inadequate shoulders, poor sight distance, and low travel speeds.  Click for more...

Barnhart Crane & Rigging and Powell Companies have reached a definitive agreement under which Barnhart will purchase Powell’s crane rental division, which has locations in Knoxville and Johnson City, Tenn. Powell’s crane rental division has served the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas for 40 years. Clarence Brown Conference Center Crosses Halfway Point →

On July 1, 2009, Bartow County civic leaders assembled to break ground on the new Clarence Brown Conference Center in Cartersville, Ga. Currently, the $20-million, LEED Certified facility is approximately 60 percent finished and is on track for an August 2010 completion date. Hogan Construction Group LLC, Norcross, Ga., is the general contractor on the project. Bartow County and each of its municipalities are jointly funding the conference center through special purpose local option sales tax proceeds, which also is funding a number of other local projects.  Click for more...


Bridge Project Expected to Beat Deadline →

A railroad bridge replacement project is nearing an early completion date in the city of Waynesboro, Va., under the direction of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The contract of $9,862,043 was awarded to Abernathy Construction, Glen Allen, Va. The project is headed by David Abernathy, superintendent, and Jeffrey Abernathy. According to Sandy Myers, public relations manager of VDOT’s Staunton District, Abernathy redesigned the railroad bridge, saving the organization $400,000.  Click for more...

New Allegheny Bridge Project in Final Stage →

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is heading a $190 million project to replace an aging span across the Allegheny River with the first major post-tensioned segmental bridges in the Commonwealth. The existing bridge is located 14 mi. northeast of Pittsburgh and the job is part of a project to reconstruct I-76 between mile posts 46.56 and 49.54, improving the highway and increasing traffic safety and capacity.  Click for more...

ALL Sunshine Crane Rental of Apopka, Fla., a member of the ALL Family of Companies, was presented with two awards from the Florida division of the United Safety Council at its awards banquet on Jan. 22. The awards were given for the period of Oct. 1, 2008, through Sept. 30, 2009. New South Street Bridge in Philadelphia Under Way →

It was time to take action to replace an almost 90-year-old bridge spanning the Schuylkill Expressway (Interstate 76) in Philadelphia. Not only was the South Street Bridge structurally deficient, but a six-ton weight limit was in operation, and in addition, the structure had been shedding chunks of concrete, including some that landed on the expressway. Construction Begins on North Carolina’s First Toll Road →

North Carolina’s first toll road, the Western Wake Freeway, will leave those traveling the length of the 12.5-mi. (20.1 km) roadway with an average 20 minutes more free time per trip, according to Jason R. Peterson of the North Carolina Turnpike Authority. “If progress continues on schedule, the mass of workers commuting from the Apex and Holly Springs areas to Research Triangle Park will be able to take the Western Wake Freeway as an alternative route beginning in summer 2013,” said Peterson, who also is the Triangle Expressway project manager.  Click for more...
