Stevenson Offers Sneak Peak of Midwest’s First LTR 1100 →

Stevenson Crane hosted a select group of civil contractors for a demonstration of the new LTR 1100, Liebherr’s 120 ton (109 t) telescopic crawler crane, at its Bolingbrook, Ill., facility Nov. 26. The LTR 1100 operates as a hybrid combining the quick set-up of an all terrain and the off road maneuverability of a crawler crane. ’Bridge in the Bathtub’ Moves Ahead for 2009 Completion →

The main east-west corridor between New York and Chicago is I-80 through northern Ohio. It boasts the third busiest truck traffic in the United States. Average daily traffic exceeds 65,000 vehicles per day, with approximately 45 percent of that being truck traffic. A 20-year projection is 80,000 vehicles per day. Groundbreaking took place in April 2006 for a $91.5 million Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) project to replace the antiquated twin I-80/Meander Creek Reservoir bridges and several miles of freeway from SR 46 to the Ohio Turnpike and on to the I-80/SR 11 interchange in Austintown Township, in northern Ohio.  Click for more...


Barnhill Contracting Blazes Trail Around Wake Forest →

The third and final leg of a new highway bypass around the Wake County town of Wake Forest, N.C., northeast of Raleigh, is currently under way and is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2010. Work began on the $11.5 million third phase of the North Carolina Highway 98/Wake Forest Bypass in March. The state Department of Transportation (NCDOT) project is relatively short, at 1.55 mi. (2.5 km), but when finished will complete a nearly $30 million, four-lane, median divided highway approximately 7 mi.  Click for more...

Safety Handrails Now Standard on Liebherr Crawler Cranes Sold in U.S. →

Liebherr Nenzing Crane Co. is now fitting handrails as standard on top of crawler cranes delivered to U.S. customers to reduce the risk of operators falling while climbing over the crane. Crane operators and maintenance technicians are periodically required to clamber over the top of cranes, to access the engine or to inspect winches, ropes and other components. Roadwork on Hold as Crews Relocate Utilities →

Gilchrist Construction Company, a heavy highway contractor based in central Louisiana, is in the midst of a $23.3 million project in Shreveport. According to Project Manager Justin Rhodes, the job, which began July 28 and is expected to be completed by July 1, 2011, consists of replacing a heavily traveled two lane road with a five lane road (two lanes in each direction with a center turn lane). Manitex has acquired the assets of Crane and Machinery Inc. (Crane), and Schaeff Inc, (Schaeff) for $3.7 million, consisting of $1.0 million in stock and assumption of $2.7 million in debt. Crane and Schaeff, formerly private companies owned by GT Distribution, had combined 2007 revenues of $21 million. Crane and Machinery is an authorized dealer for Terex rough terrain and truck cranes, Fuchs material handlers as well as Manitex boom trucks and sign cranes and also is a supplier of second hand equipment, replacement crane and equipment parts and repair and maintenance services.  Click for more...

When the new I-5/SR 502 interchange is completed in Washington State next year, not only will Battle Ground be directly connected to the interstate but a new entry and exit point also will have been provided for the limited access highway, shortening the route between the two roads and leading to reduced travel time. AEM Calls for Timely Completion of OSHA Crane Safety Standards →

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) has urged the U.S. Department of Labor and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to act now for timely completion of new crane safety standards that have been in development since 2003. AEM President Dennis Slater sent a letter to U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Elaine Chao and OSHA Assistant Secretary Edwin Foulke in which AEM asked the department to “expedite the approval process and give this safety initiative the full attention it deserves.” Slater noted that AEM and its members “fully support the actions of the Department of Labor and OSHA in developing a new and comprehensive Crane Safety Standard that would replace the current 30 year old lifting regulations and update the safety requirements needed in the crane industry.  Click for more...
