Under a new modified design/build approach, the State of New Jersey and its contractor are way ahead of schedule on a $58-million bridge construction project in the center of the state. George A. Harms Construction Co., Howell, NJ, is erecting the four-lane Route 9 structure over the Raritan River between Woodbridge and Sayreville. Inc. of Atlanta, GA, have teamed up to complete a $27.9-million bridge and shoulder widening project along Interstate 16 in Laurens and Treutlen counties. Reeves Construction of East Dublin, GA, also plays a key role in the effort as the project’s paving contractor. The R. R. Dawson Bridge Company is the prime contractor on construction of a bridge across the Tuscaloosa River, bypassing the city of Tuscaloosa, AL, and has just been awarded a joint venture contract with RaCon Inc. to construct the rest of the bridge. “We actually started the job in June of 2000,” said Bob Dawson, company owner. “We’re close to 50 percent done. Contractors Pump Up Capability of Atlanta Waste Facility →
The city of Atlanta, GA, is taking a proactive approach in keeping its sewage system and pumping stations in the best working condition possible. In a recently completed job, a sewage pumping station rehab project at Utoy Waste Treatment Facility, was done by Archer Western of Atlanta, GA, and the subcontractor Gould & Associates-NES Pumping Systems, also of Atlanta, GA, and Houston, TX. “We’re putting in the new valves where the flow comes in on four different pumps, that are 30 in.,” explained Larry Appling of Archer Western. The project required that the pump station be shut down during the rehab which required a bypass route for the sewage. Gould & Associates subcontracted a 50-million gallon per day (mgd) bypass on this pump station. The job was set up with seven pumps. Click for more...

The Alabama Department of Transportation has awarded a $9.7-million contract to Scott Bridge Company Inc. for work on U.S. 31 in Montgomery, Elmore and Autauga counties. Work on the contract, which involves roadwork and relief bridge replacement over the Alabama River, began in May 1999. The construction on U.S. 31 extends two miles from milepost 185 to milepost 187, including the main bridge over the Alabama River, which spans 2,310 ft. Click for more...

SmartCrane Leads the Fight Against Swaying →
SmartCrane, a division of Hampton, VA-based Daniel H. Wagner Associates Inc. (DHWA), has created software that automates the acceleration of crane trolleys in order to prevent cargo from swaying. In July, SmartCrane signed a five-year contract with Mannesmann Dematic AG Gottwald to supply software for its line of Mobile Harbour Cranes. Grove Crane is now offering an additional 2,000-lbs. (907 kg) counterweight for the TMS540 and ATS540 truck cranes. This counterweight increase in these 40-ton (35 t) units from 6,000 to 8,000 lbs. The Cargill Fertilizer facility at Port Cargill in Savage, MN, needed to reduce operating costs and increase the volume handled by its barge off-loading operation. A conventional cable crane and rope operated bucket had been the off-loading method at the facility for years, but increasing safety concerns, repair costs and poor reliability made it clear that a change was needed. The Grove GMK5120B all-terrain crane was introduced just a few months ago. The 120-ton (100 t) unit with a five-section 167-ft. (51 m) boom, and with lattice boom extensions, has a maximum tip height of 288 ft. (88 m). The Megaform Twin-Lock boom system and the ECOS electronic crane operating systems provide fast setup.
