You would be hard-pressed to find a place in Germany that is as busy and congested as the area around the main train station in Stuttgart. And that is exactly where Bietigheim-Bissingen-based crane service provider Wiesbauer had to erect a 295 ft. (90-m)-tall top-slewing tower crane for construction company STRABAG-Züblin and STRABAG-BMTI. Norwegian Crane Norway Group has signed an order for 10 new Demag all terrain cranes, ranging from 110 to 275.5 ton (100 to 250 t) lifting capacities and a new 716.5 ton (650-t) Demag CC 3800-1 crawler crane. Charles Blalock & Sons of Sevierville, Tenn., was awarded contract for a portion of a multi-phase $71 million contract to realign and improve 1.69 miles of SR115/Alcoa Hwy south of downtown Knoxville, Tenn. One stretch of the new road requires retaining walls be 65 ft. (19.8 m) tall. Mike Becker, CCO trainer at Stephenson Equipment's Harrisburg branch, was appointed to the PA Board of Crane Operators in March 2018. The primary purpose of the Board is to assure all crane operators in Pennsylvania are certified and subsequently licensed. Requiring crane operators to be certified and licensed requires crane operators to be better trained which leads to safer operation. Akron Children's Hospital is eagerly awaiting the addition to the existing Considine Professional Building by Welty Building Company Ltd. The $82 million, 230,000 sq. ft. addition began in March 2017 and will be completed in the summer of 2018. The new addition continues the campus transformation that began in 2012 with the Kay Jewelers Pavilion. The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced a proposed rule to increase the safety of America's construction sites. In addition to providing long-term clarity regarding crane operator certification requirements, the proposal reinstates the employer duty to ensure that a crane operator is qualified to safely operate equipment. The Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) $20.5 million U.S. 2 Escanaba River Bridge Replacement in Wells Township of Delta County, a project awarded to Zenith Tech Inc., is scheduled to be completed in October 2018. The highlight of the project has been the successful lifting of the 200,000 lb. steel superstructure of the rail bridge, which will be reused at another location as the backbone of a new structure. Mosites Construction & Development Company (Mosites) is working on a $93 million infrastructure project that will add seven new bridges along 4 mi. of highway on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Pittsburgh. The pier caps of the first bridge have already been completed, and two Manitowoc cranes — a Manitowoc MLC165-1 and a Grove GHC75 — were crucial to the success of the project. The Pittsburgh-based company chose the MLC165-1 to build the pier caps, but conditions on the job site made erecting the 182-ton (165 t) crawler crane difficult. Click for more...

Four large cranes were carefully barged under two Staten Island bridges April 26. The equipment holds the title for the largest pre-assembled cranes to ever pass beneath the Bayonne Bridge since its 2017 elevation to 215 ft. above the Kill Van Kull, SI Live reported. Phase two of the $700 million project to clean up traffic problems in downtown Birmingham is nearing completion as work on phase three continues to progress. The project, known as the 59/20 Bridges, includes widening roads, elevating bridges, constructing new interchange ramps and replacing bridges over portions of I-59/20 and I-65.
