A Manitowoc 2250 crawler crane is playing a powerful role in the construction of an 800-MW co-generation power plant in Sayreville, NJ. During the construction, the crane will lift components that weigh up to 300,000 lbs. for Midwest Mechanical Contractors of New Jersey Inc., who is installing the heat recovery steam generators or HRSG. The crane will lift the 150-ft.-long by 30-ft.-wide by 85-ft.-high HRSG during the yearlong contract to build the Red Oak Co-Generation Plant. The 2250 was selected for its exceptional lifting capacity and versatility, according to Dan Kearney, vice president/operations manager, Midwest Mechanical. Rented from Timmy Shinn of United Crane Rentals Inc., the crane is set up to convert to a 500-ton (454 t) unit. For the Red Oak project, the 2250 will be used as a 300- to 500-ton (272 to 454 t) unit, depending upon the application. A repeat customer of United, Midwest Mechanical looks to Shinn for quality service and support. “United has gone above and beyond just renting the equipment,” said Kearney. “They’ve really come through as a great asset to our planning and scheduling, including but not limited to helping with the layout of our rigging diagrams.” “The 600,000-lb./1 million-lb. unit,” said Shinn, “is the perfect addition to our crawler line. “It’s important to point out that the Manitowoc 2250 is in a league of its own. There’s no other 300/500-ton crawler that has the same capability at this point,” said Shinn. “With the various attachments, and luffing jib capabilities, it’s a very versatile and extremely mobile machine.” Shinn purchased two 2250s from Equipco Cranes, a division of L.B. Smith. With these purchases, Shinn becomes the first to own the Manitowoc 2250s in the state of New Jersey. For more information about the 2250, call United Crane at 800/356-6260.
