Summit Completes Rollout of Next-Generation Hydraulic Crane Lineup

Five additional models complete a seven-crane lineup designed exclusively for integration with Summit's Advanced Safety Electronics (ASE) Phase 5 control system.

Summit Truck Bodies has completed the rollout of its next-generation hydraulic crane lineup, adding the 620, 629, 820, 1020 and 1029 models.

The five new cranes extend the platform first introduced with the 829 and later scaled into the heavy-duty capacity class with the 1229. Together, the seven models offer maximum lifting capacities from 6,000 to 12,000 lbs. and options in both 20-ft. and 29-ft. reach classes, giving customers more flexibility to match the crane to their equipment, service body and day-to-day lifting requirements.

The complete lineup includes:

• 620: 6,000-lb maximum lifting capacity, 20-ft reach class

• 629: 6,000-lb maximum lifting capacity, 29-ft reach class

• 820: 8,000-lb maximum lifting capacity, 20-ft reach class

• 829: 8,000-lb maximum lifting capacity, 29-ft reach class

• 1020: 10,000-lb maximum lifting capacity, 20-ft reach class

• 1029: 10,000-lb maximum lifting capacity, 29-ft reach class

• 1229: 12,000-lb maximum lifting capacity, 29-ft reach class

"When we began redesigning the 829, our goal was to develop a higher-capacity crane in a smaller overall package and establish the boom profile, component layout and hydraulic system that future models could build on," said Brent Thompson, lead of product development at Summit Truck Bodies. "Completing the lineup carries that platform across multiple capacity and reach classes, with fully proportional hydraulic valves providing smoother, more precise multifunction control."

Platform Architecture Extends Across Multiple Capacity Classes

Summit developed the new crane family around shared engineering priorities, including improved strength-to-weight performance, lower-profile designs, precise proportional operation and increased serviceability.

Features available across the new lineup include continuous rotation, fully proportional hydraulic controls and a redesigned modular anti-two-block system for improved protection and serviceability. Updated boom, winch and rotation designs help reduce the overall crane profile while supporting efficient picking, positioning and stowing.

The fully proportional hydraulic valve provides precise, smooth control when operating multiple crane functions simultaneously. This increased controllability helps operators position loads more efficiently while supporting faster, safer crane operation.

"From the beginning, our focus was to create lighter, stronger cranes using optimized designs that could also be manufactured efficiently," said Christian Glascock, design engineering manager at Summit Truck Bodies. "Feedback from field technicians kept precise control, easier troubleshooting and after-sales support at the forefront as we developed the cranes and Phase 5 system."

Offering complementary 20-ft and 29-ft models at multiple capacity levels also helps customers right-size the crane for the work. Fleets can select additional reach when needed or choose a more compact configuration without moving into a higher lifting-capacity class than the application requires.

ASE Phase 5 Control System

The expanded crane lineup is engineered exclusively for use with Summit's Advanced Safety Electronics Phase 5 Control System, which is standard on Summit service trucks equipped with hydraulic cranes.

ASE Phase 5 integrates crane, body and chassis controls into a single operating platform. Operators can access critical functions through three interfaces: the main touchscreen control panel, the wireless remote and the in-cab control panel.

The fully proportional wireless remote provides smooth, simultaneous crane control while displaying real-time Load Moment Indicator data, operating status and system alerts. Operators can also deploy and monitor outriggers, activate frequently used functions and automatically return the crane to its stowed position from the remote.

Additional Phase 5 capabilities include load moment indicator slow-and-stop protections near operating limits, novice mode, built-in diagnostics, maintenance tracking, programmable hot keys and data capture designed to support future fleet-management integration.
