NYC: No Unlicensed Crane Operators →

NEW YORK (AP) Authorities said surprise checks of nearly 50 construction cranes around New York City have uncovered no unlicensed operators. City investigators randomly checked 47 cranes July 25. The Department of Investigation (DOI) said all the rigs had properly licensed operators, but one crane had an expired permit. A partial stop-work order and a violation were issued. The checks follow a spike in construction accidents throughout the city, where crane accidents have killed at least nine people since March.  Click for more...

Crews have been at work for a little more than a year widening a nearly 2-mi. (3.2 km) stretch of Hillcrest Road in Mobile, Ala., to accommodate increased traffic flow in the growing area. WASHINGTON (AP) In the wake of three construction crane accidents in the past three months that claimed 11 lives, industry groups June 5 called for nationwide safety standards. An industry council agreed on a set of standards in July 2004 and recommended them to the Department of Labor, but the proposal has languished within the department’s Occupational Health and Safety Administration since then, the groups said.  Click for more...


UDOT Nears Completion of $685M Legacy Parkway →

The construction of a 14-mi. (22.5 km) highway connecting Salt Lake City, Utah, with its suburbs on the northern end is nearing completion. In fact, some segments are currently ahead of schedule as the road known as the Legacy Parkway is prepared for a late September or early October opening. The new Favelle Favco Model 60T telescopic boom crawler crane with 60-ton (54 t) capacity and a 4-section, 105-ft. (32 m) boom tip is built on a Caterpillar Model 325 excavator power module. The crane is powered by a quad turbocharged 168-hp (125 kW) Cat diesel engine with automatic engine control and an electronic power unit control with backup system. Link Belt’s HTC-8675 Series II 75-ton (70 t) telescopic truck crane has a 127-ft. (38.7 m) formed boom, which adds 12 ft. (3.6 m) over its predecessor, the HTC 8675. It uses Link-Belt’s latching boom known for its ability to telescope loads. The boom has four modes, EM1 to EM4, instead of two for more flexibility. Manitowoc’s latest topless tower crane from Potain — the MDT 268 — is the largest crane in the redesigned MDT range. The crane has an improved reach and numerous features to simplify and speed up the erection and dismantle process. The crane is available in a J10 version with an 11-ton (9.9 t) capacity and a J12 version with a 13.2-ton (12 t) capacity. Continuing the HYLAB tradition, Link-Belt’s 298 HSL brings hydraulic pilot operated controls and reliability to the table. With a 230-ton (209 t) capacity, it has 55,000 lbs. (24,948 kg) of available line pull and a maximum line speed of 525 fpm (160 mpm). To handle this kind of line pull, the wide, 35-in. (89 cm) front and rear drums demand 1.1-in. (2.8 cm) rope. Tower Cranes Aid Transfer of Acropolis Antiquities →

A section of a sacred marble frieze sculpted by Phidias 2,500 years ago was moved last October from its original home on the Parthenon, perched high on the Acropolis, Athens’s rocky citadel. It was the first of numerous priceless artifacts transferred to a nearby modernistic concrete and glass museum. The artifacts’ journey involved a relay performed by three tower cranes. Crane Rental Corporation Breaks in Manitowoc 18000 →

Crane Rental Corporation has just completed an inaugural lift with its second Manitowoc 18000 crane. The crane was shipped from the factory directly to a St. Petersburg, Fla., job site in early February. Assembly of the crane was completed within a week and work began the next day. The primary task for the crane was hoisting a 492,000-lb. (223,000 kg) transformer from Crane Rental’s 12-line Goldhofer hydraulic platform trailer on to its final foundation.  Click for more...


Crews Build New Bridges to Chincoteague Island →

The Black Narrows Bridge and the Chincoteague Channel Bridge on Route 175 provide the only access to Chincoteague Island, Va. In recent years, the bridges began falling into ill repair, prompting the town to call upon the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) to supply funds to replace the bridges. The town of Chincoteague, famous for its annual Pony Swim and Auction, cited the roughly 4,000 residents and more than 1 million tourists each year who use the bridges as the primary motivation to approve the $68.7 million project.  Click for more...


Alaska Highway Moves on Despite Winter →

It’s the second-to-last week in February, and Dave Schnabl of Alaska Interstate Construction (AIC) is hoping for below-freezing temperatures at the job site. One might think that when you’re working about 95 mi. (152 km) northeast of Anchorage, like Schnabl and his crew, the last thing you’d hope for is colder weather.
