Potain Unveils Largest Topless Tower Crane in MDT Range →
Manitowoc’s latest topless tower crane from Potain — the MDT 268 — is the largest crane in the redesigned MDT range. The crane has an improved reach and numerous features to simplify and speed up the erection and dismantle process. The crane is available in a J10 version with an 11-ton (9.9 t) capacity and a J12 version with a 13.2-ton (12 t) capacity. Continuing the HYLAB tradition, Link-Belt’s 298 HSL brings hydraulic pilot operated controls and reliability to the table. With a 230-ton (209 t) capacity, it has 55,000 lbs. (24,948 kg) of available line pull and a maximum line speed of 525 fpm (160 mpm). To handle this kind of line pull, the wide, 35-in. (89 cm) front and rear drums demand 1.1-in. (2.8 cm) rope. Manitowoc’s RT540E rough-terrain crane, from Grove, features dual-axis, electronic joysticks and a sleeker, more modern cab. According to Neil Hollingshead, global product manager for Manitowoc’s rough-terrain crane product line, the new cab and controls improve operator comfort and productivity. “Operators can easily view gauges for all engine functions on the clean, automotive-style control panel in the dash,” he said. Nearly 12,000 adults and kids were on hand to experience an opportunity to Meet the Machines at Budrovich Excavating & Contracting headquarters on April 26. The fourth annual event, co-hosted by Fabick CAT, welcomed a record number of approximately 4,500 kids ranging in age from 3 to 16. Tower Cranes Aid Transfer of Acropolis Antiquities →
A section of a sacred marble frieze sculpted by Phidias 2,500 years ago was moved last October from its original home on the Parthenon, perched high on the Acropolis, Athens’s rocky citadel. It was the first of numerous priceless artifacts transferred to a nearby modernistic concrete and glass museum. The artifacts’ journey involved a relay performed by three tower cranes. Crane Rental Corporation Breaks in Manitowoc 18000 →
Crane Rental Corporation has just completed an inaugural lift with its second Manitowoc 18000 crane. The crane was shipped from the factory directly to a St. Petersburg, Fla., job site in early February. Assembly of the crane was completed within a week and work began the next day. The primary task for the crane was hoisting a 492,000-lb. (223,000 kg) transformer from Crane Rental’s 12-line Goldhofer hydraulic platform trailer on to its final foundation. Click for more...
Crews Build New Bridges to Chincoteague Island →
The Black Narrows Bridge and the Chincoteague Channel Bridge on Route 175 provide the only access to Chincoteague Island, Va. In recent years, the bridges began falling into ill repair, prompting the town to call upon the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) to supply funds to replace the bridges. The town of Chincoteague, famous for its annual Pony Swim and Auction, cited the roughly 4,000 residents and more than 1 million tourists each year who use the bridges as the primary motivation to approve the $68.7 million project. Work is under way on the $141 million “Route 52 Causeway, Contract A1, Bridge Replacement, Reconstruction and Resurfacing” project in Ocean City and Somers Point, N.J., in Atlantic and Cape May counties. Plans for the 1.5-mi. (2.4 km) project call for reconstruction of Route 52, including construction of four new bridge spans, roadway construction including elimination of a round-about, and area improvements such as pedestrian walkways, fishing piers, and a new tourism facility, according to Chris Carter, senior project engineer of George Harms Construction Co. Representatives from Terex’s Cranes Division and IHI Construction Machinery Limited gathered to celebrate the production of the 500th crane delivered to Terex Cranes Dec. 3. Attendees representing Terex Cranes were Steve Filipov, president, Terex Cranes; Doug Friesen, vice president and general manager North America; Scott Smith, director of sales; and Jim Strobush, sales support manager. The celebration was held at the Palace Hotel in Tokyo and included the breaking of the ceremonial Sake Barrel, presentation of commemorative photos and plaques from IHI and speeches from representatives of both organizations. For the 17th straight year, Southern Crane personnel and equipment were responsible for lifting and lowering Raleigh’s famous 1,250-lb. (567 kg) copper acorn, a highlight of the city’s New Year’s Eve festivities. Ever since the acorn “drop” became a Raleigh tradition, Southern Crane has provided its equipment free of charge for the event. Bisso Marine Crew Fishes for Crawler Crane at Bottom of Atchafalaya River →
Bisso Marine recently mobilized a salvage team, the salvage support barge C/B Big Eagle and the 700 ton (635 t) capacity D/B Cappy Bisso to salvage a crawler crane which had fallen into the Atchafalaya River in Berwick, La. The crane, which weighed approximately 100 tons, was knocked into the river upon contact with the Highway 90 Bridge in 2005. At the salvage location the water was 30 ft. deep, but in the two years since the collision, the crane had settled to approximately 25 ft. Click for more...

The Manitowoc Crane Group (MCG) has begun a multimillion-dollar expansion and renovation project on its manufacturing facility in Shady Grove, Pa. The Shady Grove manufacturing plant is comprised of 11 manufacturing buildings located on a 305-acre campus. In August 2007, construction began on additions to two of the buildings. A 9,000 sq. ft. (836 sq m) addition will house a new wash, paint and shipping area in the Manitowoc Model 999 crawler assembly building. Click for more...
MMIC Hits Ground Running With Model 14000 in Ohio →
One of the first Model 14000 crawler cranes in the field was put to work on a power plant in eastern Ohio. The crane, which is one of several ordered by rental giant ALL Erection and Crane Rental Corp., was used to erect a number of components for a new conveyor system. MMIC, an Ohio-based lifting services company, rented the Model 14000 from ALL Erection. The company was sub-contracted to erect nine conveyors on the project varying from 13 to 363 yd. The 12.5-mi. (20 km) six-lane extension of the North-South Tollway from where Interstate 355 ends at Interstate 55 (the Stevenson Expressway) through Will County to Interstate 80 opened to bicycle traffic on Veteran’s Day Nov. 11 to considerable fanfare as communities along the route staged local festivals to coincide with opening ceremonies.
