Grove GMK7550 Helps Hoist Mast on USS Stennis →

Earlier this year Ness Cranes of Seattle, WA, sent its Grove GMK7450 (known as the Grove GMK7550 in the United States) all-terrain crane on board the U.S. Navy’s aircraft carrier, USS John C Stennis, to help erect a new mast. Work took place at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard just outside Seattle, in nearby Bremerton, and lasted just over a month. Ness’s directive for the GMK7550 was to replace the ship’s main mast, as the additional weight of new antennae exceeded the structural limit for the old mast. Click for more...

On the shore of Presque Isle Bay in Erie, PA, the Erie County Convention Center Authority (ECCCA) is embarking on the largest development project in Erie’s history. Along with the 28,800 sq.-ft. (2,676 sq m) exhibition hall, the Bayfront Convention Center Complex also will feature an upscale hotel and restaurant development alongside the U.S. Brig Niagara and the new Erie Maritime Museum. Ideas for the Convention Center began to circulate in the mid-1980s, when private business owners and the Erie Port Authority felt that their needs exceeded the capabilities of the Erie Civic Center, which hosts a variety of concerts, sporting events and small trade shows. Massive steel chunks of the Silas N. Pearman Bridge became entangled as they collapsed into the Town Creek Channel after 2,250 lbs. of strategically placed explosives meant to slice the bridge into 11 sections, failed to completely discharge. Demolition plans for a vacant building were accelerated around 4:15 p.m. on Oct. 6 after chunks of an attached billboard crashed through its roof, causing it to implode. The building, located at the northeast corner of Broad and High streets in Columbus, OH, is part of the multi-building, $30 million reconstruction project by Columbus real-estate company, Casto. A $1.5 billion, 49-mi. (78 km) stretch of road in central Texas is being constructed with the help of a host of Manitowoc equipment, including 555 and 777 lattice-boom crawler cranes and eight Grove RT760E rough-terrain cranes. Primco Inc. is a family-owned contractor specializing in paving and bridgework, and although the company started out small, it is currently taking on a big project –– constructing the bridge spanning the Elkhart River in Goshen, IN.
