Bay Crane Hoists 7-Ton Tree in Rockefeller Center →

NEW YORK (AP) The 76-ft. Norway spruce that once irked Mary Rizzo when it blocked the walkway to her house looked just perfect to her after it was erected to serve as Rockefeller Center’s Christmas tree. The 7-ton, 43-ft. wide tree was taken from Carmine and Mary Rizzo’s property in Bloomsbury, NJ. Crews March Past Halfway Point on Chicago’s Soldier Field Project →

After working for almost seven months and with approximately five months to go, crews have placed the majority of the structural steel, and fans are ready to cheer the early completion of Soldier Field. Villager Construction Tackles Route 31 Challenges in NY →

In Palmyra, NY, on Route 31 a project has been under way to reconstruct a 1.9-mi. (3.1 km) section of the town from the Macedon town line in the west to the bridge which spans the Erie Canal in the east. The $7.5-million project includes installing a new water main as well as new storm and sewer lines. Slow Crane Sales Cause Manitowoc to Reduce Earning Forecast →

Manitowoc Co. reduced its 2002 profit forecast as crane sales remained weak from a slowdown in commercial construction. The maker of cranes and refrigerated vending machines employs about 8,000 people, including 2,375 in Wisconsin, and since July has cut 5 percent of its total work force. The 400 job cuts have occurred mostly in crane businesses, company officials said. The slowdown comes as the crane business has become a bigger piece of the manufacturing portfolio of Manitowoc Co., which also makes ice and beverage machines and repairs and builds ships. Manitowoc had been expected to earn $2.23 a share this year, according to the average estimate of four analysts polled by Thomson First Call.  Click for more...


Grove Lifts Beams on Goldenrod Road →

Crane Rental of Orlando Florida Inc. put its new Grove GMK5240 all-terrain crane to work lifting bridge beams for Jones Brothers, general contractors on the Goldenrod Road extension project. Goldenrod Road is being expanded over the Bee Line Expressway, a major artery, which is the direct route from Orlando to Cape Canaveral. Each beam weighs 255,000 lbs. (115,666 kg) and 28 beams are being set over a two-month period. Crane Rental of Orlando began serving Florida in 1960 and now offers crane rental services on a nationwide basis.  Click for more...

Southwest Industrial Rigging (SWIR) recently used its Grove GMK5240 all-terrain to set air handling units at Micro Chip in Tempe, AZ. Electronic chip assembly takes place in clean rooms requiring special filtration, HVAC, humidification and air handling equipment. The 240-ton (216 t) GMK5240 has a standard boom length of 197 ft. ACPA Member Contributed to ’Miracle of the Mine’ Rescue →

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. Inc. (NES&L), of New Enterprise, PA, played a role in the rescue of nine coal miners trapped underground for 77 hours in Sipesville, PA, according to the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA). When rescuers issued a call for assistance, NES&L was already at the site hauling stone for drilling equipment platforms. During the ordeal, NES&L hauled 47 yds. (43 m) of concrete, approximately 350 tons (315 t) of st one, and 10 light plants to the rescue site. BQE Project Breaks Records in NY →

At $215 million, it’s the largest single highway contract let to date by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). Covering only 2 mi. (3.2 km), it’s also the most concentrated. The reconstruction and rehabilitation of the northern end of the six-lane Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) in Woodside, Queens, NY, calls for demolishing and replacing 13 highway bridges and four railroad bridges, each a section at a time to keep traffic moving.  Click for more...

S&H Steel Co. Inc., of Gilbert, AZ, handed all the steel erection for the Love of Christ Lutheran Church, Mesa, AZ, expansion to its existing facilities. Its new Center of Compassion, which opened this summer, includes performing arts, gym, nursery, classrooms, music room and other activity rooms. The new 100-ton (91 t) capacity Link-Belt RTC-80100 Series II rough-terrain crane picks a prefabricated condenser unit from a flatbed trailer and raises it to a vertical position. Once off the flatbed, the crane rotates the 46,000-lb. (20,865 kg), 50-ft. (15 m) tall, 12-ft. Saunders and Son Inc., of Marcellus, NY, recently purchased a Kawasaki 95ZV from Tracey Road Equipment.
