ACPA Member Contributed to ’Miracle of the Mine’ Rescue →

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. Inc. (NES&L), of New Enterprise, PA, played a role in the rescue of nine coal miners trapped underground for 77 hours in Sipesville, PA, according to the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA). When rescuers issued a call for assistance, NES&L was already at the site hauling stone for drilling equipment platforms. During the ordeal, NES&L hauled 47 yds. (43 m) of concrete, approximately 350 tons (315 t) of st one, and 10 light plants to the rescue site. BQE Project Breaks Records in NY →

At $215 million, it’s the largest single highway contract let to date by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT). Covering only 2 mi. (3.2 km), it’s also the most concentrated. The reconstruction and rehabilitation of the northern end of the six-lane Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) in Woodside, Queens, NY, calls for demolishing and replacing 13 highway bridges and four railroad bridges, each a section at a time to keep traffic moving.  Click for more...


Grove TMS500E Erects Steel for Church in Mesa, Arizona →

S&H Steel Co. Inc., of Gilbert, AZ, handed all the steel erection for the Love of Christ Lutheran Church, Mesa, AZ, expansion to its existing facilities. Its new Center of Compassion, which opened this summer, includes performing arts, gym, nursery, classrooms, music room and other activity rooms. The Grove TMS500E was one of two S&H cranes, the other a Grove rough terrain. The TMS500E is a 40 ton (36 t) with standard boom length of 95 ft.  Click for more...

It is supposed to be a textbook lift. The new 100-ton (91 t) capacity Link-Belt RTC-80100 Series II rough-terrain crane picks a prefabricated condenser unit from a flatbed trailer and raises it to a vertical position. Once off the flatbed, the crane rotates the 46,000-lb. (20,865 kg), 50-ft. (15 m) tall, 12-ft. When Kawasaki recently unveiled its new 95ZV loader, two central New York aggregate producers were quick to be the first on their block to own one. W.F. Saunders and Son Inc., of Marcellus, NY, recently purchased a Kawasaki 95ZV from Tracey Road Equipment. The 43-year-old Sidney Lanier Bridge on U.S. Highway 17 in coastal Brunswick, GA, has seen its share of navigational nightmares. Because of this the U.S. Coast Guard declared the span a navigational hazard, and plans were created and funds were appropriated to replace the bridge. Police: Drunken Construction Worker Topples Crane Near Ground Zero →

A 35-ton crane fell over near the World Trade Center site on Sunday, July 28 while the operator was drunk, police said. Crane Operator Noel Brolly suffered a minor hand injury. No one else was injured, officers said. Brolly was using the 100-ft. (30 m) crane to load debris onto a truck at the World Financial Center, which was damaged by the Sept. 11 collapse of the World Trade Center towers. The crane toppled onto the West Side Highway and blocked two of its four lanes, but "traffic is pretty light in that area on Sunday morning," said Police Officer Jennara Everleth.  Click for more...

Grove Worldwide has selected Steffy Cranes Inc., of Ephrata, PA, as the winner of the TM9120 custom color die cast model contest. Steffy Cranes was selected from more than 20 entries. The prizes for winning included having a limited-edition scale model TM9120 produced in its colors along with receiving 20 of the crane models. Liebherr Tower Crane Oversees Cornell University Project →

The new “man” on Cornell University’s campus in Ithaca, NY, these days is a 154-ft. (45.7 m) Liebherr 316 EC-H 12 tower-crane. The crane is playing a commanding role in the construction of a brand new, state-of-the-art, $58.5-million nanotechnology research facility called Duffield Hall. Brooklyn Distributor Orders Eight Favco Tower Cranes →

New York Crane & Equipment Company, of Brooklyn, NY, recently received the first three of a total order of eight Favco M760 tower cranes. The Favco cranes were ordered from TES Inc. of South Kearny, NJ, a Favco distributor. John Deere to Lay Off 240 in Wisconsin →

The John Deere plant is laying off 240 workers for five months beginning in July. It is the first time the company is implementing a voluntary manufacturing leave, said human resources manager Chuck Evans said. The layoffs begin July 29. During the layoffs, employees will receive about 65 percent of their normal pay, which is the rate for employees on medical disability. That’s instead of claiming unemployment.  Click for more...

Villager Performs Picture-Perfect Pipe Work Near Kodak →

The water is flowing smoothly again under the streets near Kodak in Rochester, NY. Working 12-hour days, Villager Construction, of Fairport, replaced 3,500 ft. (1,066 m) of concrete water pipe with new 36-in. (91.4 cm) diameter ductile iron piping. Monroe County Water Authority ordered the work after several breaks occurred along Lake Avenue. “The most difficult part of the job was trying to work around Kodak’s utilities,” said Joe Venuti, president of Villager Construction.  Click for more...

Smith-Rowe Builds Patterson Ave. Bridge in Close Quarters →

The new bridge across Patterson Avenue on the east side of Winston-Salem, NC, is taking shape right alongside the deteriorating bridge it will replace. That’s the problem: The close proximity of one bridge to the other has handicapped the contractor on the project. “It’s very difficult,” said David Rowe, president of Smith-Rowe Inc. “We’ve had to put this big steel together without having enough room to do it.” The bridge will carry traffic on Oak Summit Road, which at that point rides the summit of a hill as it passes over Patterson Road.  Click for more...
