Police: Drunken Construction Worker Topples Crane Near Ground Zero →

A 35-ton crane fell over near the World Trade Center site on Sunday, July 28 while the operator was drunk, police said. Crane Operator Noel Brolly suffered a minor hand injury. No one else was injured, officers said. Brolly was using the 100-ft. (30 m) crane to load debris onto a truck at the World Financial Center, which was damaged by the Sept. 11 collapse of the World Trade Center towers. The crane toppled onto the West Side Highway and blocked two of its four lanes, but "traffic is pretty light in that area on Sunday morning," said Police Officer Jennara Everleth. Click for more...

Grove Worldwide has selected Steffy Cranes Inc., of Ephrata, PA, as the winner of the TM9120 custom color die cast model contest. Steffy Cranes was selected from more than 20 entries. The prizes for winning included having a limited-edition scale model TM9120 produced in its colors along with receiving 20 of the crane models. The new “man” on Cornell University’s campus in Ithaca, NY, these days is a 154-ft. (45.7 m) Liebherr 316 EC-H 12 tower-crane. The crane is playing a commanding role in the construction of a brand new, state-of-the-art, $58.5-million nanotechnology research facility called Duffield Hall. St. Louis-based McCarthy Building Companies is providing construction management and general contracting services on the project and is working alongside the construction firm, Welliver McGuire Inc., of Elmira, NY. New York Crane & Equipment Company, of Brooklyn, NY, recently received the first three of a total order of eight Favco M760 tower cranes. The Favco cranes were ordered from TES Inc. of South Kearny, NJ, a Favco distributor. Rental of five of the eight units has already been scheduled with two going to high-rise building construction in New York City and another three going to a long-term waste-water treatment project. John Deere to Lay Off 240 in Wisconsin →

The John Deere plant is laying off 240 workers for five months beginning in July. It is the first time the company is implementing a voluntary manufacturing leave, said human resources manager Chuck Evans said. The layoffs begin July 29. The water is flowing smoothly again under the streets near Kodak in Rochester, NY. Working 12-hour days, Villager Construction, of Fairport, replaced 3,500 ft. (1,066 m) of concrete water pipe with new 36-in. (91.4 cm) diameter ductile iron piping. Monroe County Water Authority ordered the work after several breaks occurred along Lake Avenue. “The most difficult part of the job was trying to work around Kodak’s utilities,” said Joe Venuti, president of Villager Construction. The new bridge across Patterson Avenue on the east side of Winston-Salem, NC, is taking shape right alongside the deteriorating bridge it will replace. That’s the problem: The close proximity of one bridge to the other has handicapped the contractor on the project. “It’s very difficult,” said David Rowe, president of Smith-Rowe Inc. “We’ve had to put this big steel together without having enough room to do it.” The bridge will carry traffic on Oak Summit Road, which at that point rides the summit of a hill as it passes over Patterson Road. Seven months after the first historical journey, the second segment of Pennsylvania’s Braddock Dam made an identical 27.5-mi. (44 km) trip up the Ohio and Monongahela rivers. On Feb. 27, the 9,600-ton (8,640 t) block of floating concrete was pushed by two towboats from the fabrication site in Leetsdale to an outfitting pier at Duquesne. Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd. will integrate their crawler-crane operations into a 50-50 joint venture to be set up in July, the two companies said Monday, April 22. The move reflects continued weak demand in the wake of a cut in public works spending by the government. The new venture will become Japan ’s largest crawler-crane manufacturer, commanding nearly 50 percent of the domestic market. The two companies will combine all their crawler-crane operations, including sales, production and development operations into the new venture, which will be capitalized at Y1 billion and aim for annual sales of Y200 billion.
