Journey of the Dam Continues Up the Monongahela →
Seven months after the first historical journey, the second segment of Pennsylvania’s Braddock Dam made an identical 27.5-mi. (44 km) trip up the Ohio and Monongahela rivers. On Feb. 27, the 9,600-ton (8,640 t) block of floating concrete was pushed by two towboats from the fabrication site in Leetsdale to an outfitting pier at Duquesne. Hitachi Construction, Sumitomo Heavy To Merge Crane Operations →
Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Ltd. will integrate their crawler-crane operations into a 50-50 joint venture to be set up in July, the two companies said Monday, April 22. The move reflects continued weak demand in the wake of a cut in public works spending by the government. The new venture will become Japan ’s largest crawler-crane manufacturer, commanding nearly 50 percent of the domestic market. The two companies will combine all their crawler-crane operations, including sales, production and development operations into the new venture, which will be capitalized at Y1 billion and aim for annual sales of Y200 billion. Early in December, construction workers lifted into place the project’s second massive roof truss that spanned together nearly 80 percent of the stadium’s steel roof. Crane Danger Evacuates NJ Neighborhood →
More than 100 people were evacuated from homes and businesses near the Jersey City, NJ, waterfront Jan. 16 when it appeared that a construction crane was in danger of falling. Attached to the side of a building in which more than half of 29 floors have been completed, the crane’s boom apparently overextended and began to tilt due to an electrical malfunction. Officials said the unit’s operator felt a shift and was warned by computer that the crane was tipping. The United Nations has purchased a number of Grove AT422T all-terrain cranes and has them in use in many different locations working on a wide range of projects. Machines are presently at work in the Congo, Italy and Lebanon. Additionally, a unit is scheduled for delivery to East Timor in early 2002. The AT422T is equipped with a 70-ft.
