Crane Danger Evacuates NJ Neighborhood →
More than 100 people were evacuated from homes and businesses near the Jersey City, NJ, waterfront Jan. 16 when it appeared that a construction crane was in danger of falling. Attached to the side of a building in which more than half of 29 floors have been completed, the crane’s boom apparently overextended and began to tilt due to an electrical malfunction. Officials said the unit’s operator felt a shift and was warned by computer that the crane was tipping. Iowa Mold Tooling Co. Inc. (IMT) has announced that it has purchased the assets of Stedt Hydraulic Crane Corporation (Stetco) of Westborough, MA. Stetco is a 50-year-old firm that has developed a line of catch basin cleaning products marketed under the "Stetco" registered trade name. By the 1970s, the Stetco brand was sold successfully throughout the northeastern United States. Falling Crane Kills 5, Injures 91 in Chinese School →
A huge construction crane toppled onto a school building in western China, killing five people and injuring more than 90 students as it sliced through the structure, officials and state media said. "Four students aged under 12 and the operator of the crane were killed," said a city official of Tianshui city in the western province of Gansu. Nineteen students from the Tianshui school remained in hospital, including three in critical condition, he added. According to the Lanzhou Morning News, some 91 students were injured in the accident, which occurred Monday while children were attending their afternoon lessons. The crane was in use at a nearby construction site when it toppled over onto the school building and "tore through the three-storey building from roof to bottom," the newspaper said. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but the official said a mechanical fault in the crane might be to blame. Click for more...

Tucked in the top floor of Oklahoma’s state capitol, they’re demolishing the solid concrete saucer dome that stood here only a few months ago. The Oklahoma state capitol, originally completed in 1917, was designed to have a dome similar to the one in Washington, D.C.
