Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers wrapped up its largest Chicago-area auction (its third largest North American auction) on June 1 to 3 in Morris, IL, with gross auction sales exceeding $59 million. Approximately 3,000 people from 35 countries and all 50 U.S. states registered to bid during the three-day unreserved auction at the company’s 91-acre permanent auction site southwest of Chicago. Tadano America Corp. President Kenichi Sawada started the company’s used crane division in January and appointed Denis Roberts as used crane manager. A veteran of the crane industry since 1974, Roberts has worked as an operator, salesman, and in the parts and repair departments. On occasion, Roberts, who is based in Augusta, GA, has even instructed newcomers in crane operation. Empire Crane Company, of Syracuse, NY, has announced that it has begun representing the Grove Industrial Crane line. ’Kids of All Ages’ Get to Meet the Machines in Missouri →

Approximately 2,000 adults and 1,300 kids, ages 3 to 15, attended the first annual “Meet the Machines” event co-sponsored by The Budrovich Companies and Fabick CAT. The event was held at Budrovich’s headquarters, which is on the site of an old quarry, in south St. Louis County on April 16. Every child received a hard hat and work-order ticket upon entry to the event. Until recently, Desrochers Crane Service of Derby, VT, had a dilemma of sorts. The company, located just a few miles from the Canadian border, had a 30-ton National crane and a 90-ton Grove crane, but nothing to take care of jobs in the huge gap in between. That was when Robert Desrochers turned to Wood’s CRW, of Williston, VT. The reconstruction of a portion of Interstate 84 (I-84), which is nearing completion, required an array of heavy construction equipment to meet project challenges and normal project needs. According to Rick Negro, the project manager of Plainville, CT-based Manafort Brothers Inc., the project’s general contractor, the project, which began May 21, 2003, included the reconstruction of 3 mi. Miami Gardens Drive Job Focal Point of New City →

Just more than a year after it began, three separate but related reconstruction projects in the 2-year-old city of Miami Gardens, FL, are progressing nicely toward completion. They represent the final phase of a comprehensive plan designed to improve traffic flow and safety along Miami Gardens Drive. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) launched the projects in February 2004. The fleet of cranes available for rent at Gulf Coast Crane Rental in Ft. Myers, FL, grew again in December. Don Chisum purchased a Link-Belt HTC8690 and has kept it busy since it arrived. Primarily, he said it has been used to set precast concrete planks and one contractor, Colonial Construction, in Englewood, FL, has been taking up most of its time, Chisum said. AmQuip based in Philadelphia, PA, recently added the Terex-Peiner lineup of tower cranes to is newly started tower crane business. AmQuip will carry the full line of Terex-Peiner tower cranes, which includes the SK 315 and SK 415 as well as the SK 575 with a maximum capacity of 70,600 lbs. (32,000 kg) and a maximum free standing hook height of 249 ft. Work Charges Ahead on $23M Rochester Rhinos’ Stadium →

After four years of planning, groundbreaking for a $23-million soccer stadium took place Jan. 15, 2004, in Rochester, NY, despite frigid temperatures and below zero wind chills. Approximately 50 people attended the event, during which dirt that had been moved earlier by a backhoe was shoveled back to represent the start of the much-anticipated project.
