Project Update: Woodrow Wilson Bridge Continues to Grow Over Potomac →
The Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project, a $2.44 billion mega-project, is a bridge replacement job that also includes the construction of four new interchanges. The project in its entirety includes a 7.5-mi. (12 km) corridor where work is occurring along the Capital Beltway (I-495), also designated as I-95. Manitowoc Crane Group and Kobelco Construction Machinery Co. announced an agreement under which Manitowoc Crane’s Deutsche Grove GmbH unit will supply all-terrain cranes to Kobelco. The Kobelco-branded cranes will be sold exclusively in Japan. The parties intend to introduce four models of all-terrain cranes in 2005. Toledo, OH (AP) Ironworkers who have been building an interstate bridge had few complaints about safety at the site, union and transportation officials said a day after a crane collapsed and killed three workers Feb. 16. CHARLESTON, SC (AP) A safety net caught a 4-ton (3.6 t) chunk of wood and steel that fell 200 ft. from a crane Jan. 16, saving the lives of several workers on the new Cooper River Bridge. The construction form broke free from ropes and cables holding it to a crane on top of one of the bridge’s two diamond-shaped towers. SCDOT Receives Safety Award for Highway Program →
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) received a National Highway Safety Award for installing cable barriers and using other practices to reduce interstate fatalities by nearly one-third. SCDOT is one of six state transportation departments that received National Highway Safety Awards from the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) and the Roadway Safety Foundation. “This year’s award winners have demonstrated a commitment to saving lives and making a difference,” said Roadway Safety Foundation Executive Director Diane Steed. Demolition Resumes After Indiana Crane Collapse →
EVANSVILLE, IN (AP) Demolition resumed on a multistory apartment building following the collapse of part of a 100-ton (90.7 t) crane being used to tear it down. Work on the project came to a sudden halt Monday afternoon when a weld snapped on the crane, causing part of the equipment to topple north and graze a nearby YWCA building. No one was injured and the YWCA building suffered only minor damage, but it remained closed Tuesday because the building being demolished was unstable. Click for more...
Massive I-95 Bridgeport Corridor Speeds Forward →
A major reconstruction is currently under way on Interstate 95 at Bridgeport, CT. Known as the I-95 Bridgeport Corridor, the project has an estimated total cost of $422.7 million. Notice to proceed was given on Aug. 29, 1996, and the final completion is set for June 30, 2005. According to Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT), the program consists of the modification of the I-95 roadway cross section and the realignment of I-95 as required in Bridgeport. On Dec. 11, Southeastern Crane welcomed its Charlotte, NC, neighbors into the company's newly-constructed facility. The 10,000-sq.-ft. office, warehouse and service shop is located at 5014 Davidson Highway in Concord and replaces Southeastern Crane's former location on Reames Road. Mike Davis is the branch manager of the new location that employs 11 people. Manitowoc Crane Group Holds Expo in Shady Grove, Draws Big Crowd →
The Manitowoc Crane Group held a Product Expo for distributors and customers Sept. 21 to 24. The exhibition took place at the Shady Grove, PA, facility demonstration area and featured a variety of products. The products on display included: Manitowoc lattice boom crawler cranes; Grove mobile hydraulic cranes, National Crane boom truck cranes; Potain tower cranes; and Manlift aerial work platforms. The expo marked the first time products from all divisions of the Manitowoc Crane Group had been displayed in the United States since the acquisition of Grove in 2002 and did so in a big way with more than 30 products. There were three units on display from Manitowoc Cranes: the 275 ton (250 t) 999; the 150 ton (136 t) 555; and the 132 ton (120 t) 1015 duty-cycle crane. Click for more...

Jim Mackinson, owner of Mackinson Crane, Middlesex, NJ, recently added a new National telescoping crane to its growing fleet. Mackinson purchased a Series 1400 crane from Mike Johnson, district manager, of Garden State Engine & Equipment Co. (GSE&E), Somerville, NJ. The 33-ton (30 t) crane has a 127-ft. (39 m) five-section boom, which allows the operator to perform lifts without the use of a jib. This reduces setup time and improves efficiency.
