Ron DeFeo, chairman and chief executive officer, Terex Corporation, has visited the manufacturing operations of the company’s latest crane manufacturing joint venture in China for an event to celebrate its new partnership. In late 2010, Terex signed an agreement with the privately held Shandong Topower Heavy Equipment Company for the manufacturing of lattice boom crawler cranes.

“Our partnership with Topower represents a significant step forward for the Terex Cranes product portfolio and for our presence in the Chinese market,” said DeFeo. “This event provides the opportunity to mark the promising start of our operations and to reinforce our goal of successfully combining the worldwide experience of Terex Cranes with the expertise established by Topower in the Chinese market.”

With production facilities in Luzhou for truck cranes, in Xiamen for port equipment, and in Jinan for crawler cranes, Terex Cranes has both a significant manufacturing presence and a well-established distributor network throughout China, plus sales and service offices in Beijing and Shanghai. Combining the strengths of both parties, Topower sales and after-sales teams have joined the Terex Cranes Chinese support network.

“For Terex, doing business in China means understanding local market and customer requirements,” said Ken Lousberg, president, Terex China. “This starts with strong manufacturing facilities and quality-built machines. It also means a true network of sales and service specialists, devoted to uptime and the efficient, expert solutions that customers need.”

Seeking to transfer its experience acquired in China and in other plants around the world, Terex Cranes has begun transforming the Jinan factory through the application of Terex Business System lean manufacturing principles and processes, to enhance customer focus improve workplace safety, eliminate waste and encourage a problem-solving and learning culture at all levels.

Founded in 2007, Topower has rapidly established a reputation for producing high quality crawler cranes, with lifting capacities from 77 to 397 tons (70 to 360 t). Currently serving the energy industry for the most part, it offers wider potential applications in Chinese and other Asian markets, according to the company.

“China is a strategic market offering strong potential growth for our company. We are enthusiastic about this venture and the additional potential it brings to participate in the significant infrastructure and commercial development that we expect will be continuing across China for many years to come,” said DeFeo.
